Avión means “airplane” in Spanish, a name chosen to reflect the highlands region of Jalisco, Mexico where the spirit is made. The tequila is made from Blue Weber Agave and is triple distilled which gives it an ultra smooth character whether it is the Silver, Reposado (aged for 6 months in American oak casks) or Añejo expression (aged for 2 years in American oak casks). Avión also comes in a delicious Espresso liqueur made with real Italian espresso.
Avión is produced by a fifth generation family of agave growers and the tequila was recently awarded three medals including Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. If you’re a fan of the television series Entourage, you may have seen it as their drink of choice.
At the first class themed event, dancers provided entertainment and renowned Belgian music producer and DJ, Aeroplane (Vito De Luca), flew in exclusively for the launch and performed a set of house and disco beats.
To best sample the expressions, a salt bar was set up with Jason Crawley of The Drink Cabinet serving sangritas and verditas with Avión Silver. Tasty libations were provided by the Ivy Penthouse team with cocktails such as Aviacion (Avión Silver), Avión Tommy’s Margarita with rosemary garnish, (Avión Reposado), High Plains Drifter (Avión Añejo) and Avión Espresso Martini (Avión Espresso).
The canapes had a distinct LA and South American flavour with Avión cured snapper, tortilla crisps and jalapeno salsa, crisp fried gouda puffs, guava dip; King crab, lime, cilantro and hazelnut tart; and Avión and chilli steak tartare, quail egg and lime mayo.
Avión Tequila is sold exclusively at Dan Murphy’s along with selected on-premise venues around Australia.
The Avión launch event was held on Wednesday 2nd April 2014 at the Ivy Penthouse.
