Bondi has welcomed a new neighbour with the arrival of Neighbourhood.
Neighbourhood Bar
Located at 143 Curlewis Street, a short stroll from the beach, the venue is the brain child of owners and Bondi locals Keith Hodgson and Eddie De Souza along with performer and entertainment guru, Anthony Hughes. The concept is to combine a bar and a restaurant with a radio station that will be launching soon.
Neighbourhood Bar, Indoor Seating
With a capacity of 100, the venue offers indoor and outdoor seating, a dining room behind the open galley kitchen and the coveted positions at the bar.
Neighbourhood Bar
Bar Manager, Simon McGoram ex Gardel’s Bar and former Bartender drinks editor, heads the bar with an impressive cocktail list that is kept succinct, simple and seasonal. Juices are pressed in house and if the list is adapted to availability of fresh produce.
Simon McGoram with Dark & Stormy Bra!, Pan American Clipper
The Pan American Clipper ($17) is a good choice to start, made with Laird’s Apple Brandy mixed with lime juice, absinthe and house made pomegranate grenadine. Dark and Stormy Bra! ($16) takes on a twist with a deliciously sharp hit of ginger and honey with house-blended blackstrap rum.
The Neighbourhood Mary ($17) is a popular choice for weekend brunch. Unlike most vegetable-based Bloody Marys, this one has beef master stock from the beef cheeks dish which gives it a rich and savoury note with smoked garlic salt adds complexity.
Galley Kitchen
Chef Joshua Evans (ex Bondi’s Corner House and Panama House) heads the kitchen with a share menu inspired by the US East Coast using the best Australian produce. As well as bar bites and more substantial dishes, you’ll find a popular jaffle menu that is available until close.
Wapengo Oysters & Neighbourhood Mary
Start with Wapengo Rocks Wild Organic Oysters (3 for $12), shucked to order and served in their liquor with a generous sprinkling of pepper and a side of Tabasco green pepper sauce. Fresh and briny, they go well with the kick of the Bloody Mary.
Bulleit Bourbon BBQ Wings
Sweet, sticky finger-licking goodness comes in the form of Bulleit Bourbon BBQ Wings ($14) with a rich housemade dressing. Of course, it’s messy to eat but you will regret not ordering it.
Mac & Cheese
The American influence continues with Mac and Cheese ($12) creamy and rich, prepared here with short, tubular pasta, crabmeat and speck which imparts a hint of smoke to the dish.
Braised Beef Cheek
If you’re after a more substantial dish, choose the Beef Cheeks ($26) made with pumpkin and ginger puree topped with coconut chimichurri – one of the best of its kind ever tasted. The meat is braised for 14 to16 hours then rehydrated in beef master stock. It’s rich, delicious, satisfying and it melts like butter.
The Bloody Mary Fries ($7) with house spiced tomato sauce are thin and crunchy, deliciously seasoned with secret ingredients. On their own, they pack a punch but the sauce is not as spicy as anticipated.
Dining Room
Dessert is a choice of deconstructed Oreo, Caramel Cheese Cake ($14) with salted peanut brittle or Petit Gres Champenois Triple Cream French Cheese ($24) made with cows’ milk and served with pane carasatu, cucumber and onion pickle.
Caramel Corn Old Fashioned
But if you prefer a sweet finish in liquid form, don’t miss the Caramel Corn Old Fashioned cocktail ($18), a mind-blowing creation by Simon McGoram. Buttered popcorn bourbon, salted caramel syrup, orange bitters and a little Talisker 10 year old scotch make for sweet, salty, smoky and sophisticated flavours that linger – a cocktail that keeps giving, long after the last sip.
Bondi Radio
Neighbourhood
From tasty bar bites, to killer cocktails, engaging bar chat and a side of music, Neighbourhood serves up a bit of everything, and it does it very well. The vibe is casual and friendly drawing you to stay for one more drink. Locals have made it their bar, and while the venue may be located in your neighbourhood, this neighbour will turn into your best mate.
