Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi is a free outdoor art exhibition that spans Bondi Beach to Tamarama Beach and runs along the coastal walk. Now in its 14th year, the free event with over 100 pieces of art features exhibits from artists across Australia and 11 other countries.
Every year, I look forward to the event and brace the crowds that descended onto the local stretch eager to see, photograph, and (regrettably) touch and climb over the exhibits.
Art inspires me in various ways. This year, as I stepped onto the sands of Tamarama Beach, the collection inspired me with a food theme.
Tamarama to Bondi Dégustation – inspired by Sculpture by the Sea
I start with an aperitif or glass of wine at the beach bar.
Still Life by Sang-Bong Lee – South Korea
I move on to an amuse-bouche of sun-poached organic egg, freshly laid.
Sitting Hen by Tae-Geun Yang – South Korea
An entrée of freshly-caught crab follows, ready for picking.
Critter by Paul Thurloe – NSW, Australia
Seafood bibs are provided, naturally.
Bronzed Aussie Series (Life jackets) by Nick Stranks – NSW, Australia
I am told it’s a delicacy but I’m not too sure about tasting shark fin soup.
Earth Fish by Daniel Wallwork – Queensland, Australia
And I will definitely pass on the turtle soup.
Long-Neck by Benjamin Gilbert – VIC, Australia
No need to contemplate the Chicken or the Egg scenario. Make mine a Coq au vin, s’il vous plait.
Sitting Hen by Tae-Geun Yang – South Korea
I ponder the latest rage in food but dare I try eating horse meat?
Hello Mate by Stephen King – NSW, Australia
I’ll play it safe with a juicy T-bone steak.
Sight 2007 by Jamieson Miller – Victoria, Australia
An optional cheese course? Yes please!
Greater Grater by Jimmy Rix – NSW, Australia
For dessert, I’ll just have a chocolate-dipped donut.
Olpe 2002 by Dean Snyder – USA
Now it’s time to rub my full belly.
Jolly Giants by Steve Croquett – NSW, Australia
Then flop on the sand and have a siesta.
Bondi Venus by Dennis Kalous – NSW Australia
Other Sculptures by the Sea 2010 Exhibits
Anaconda by Michael le Grand – ACT, Australia
Initialis by Tim Macfarlane Reid – WA, Australia
Oushi Zokei 2010 Circle by Keizo Ushio – Japan
Wayfarer by Patrick Oppliger – Sweden
Anguish by Gangadhar Mahato – India
The Sky is falling by Hannah Kidd – New Zealand
Sitting Hen by Tae-Geun Yang – South Korea

Clever articulation around the food theme! I like that metal hen, and the turtle too! Have to not be slack this year and check it out, thank you for these pictures!
Thanks 🙂 What can I say, I was inspired! I hope you get to make it. I thought this year’s collection was impressive. Let’s hope we get sunshine while the exhibition is on!
love it! I’m not really sure about the idea of horse meat myself. I’m sure i’ve probably eaten it and not known, but you know the idea is a bit hard to get over!
Same here. And I ponder if I ate it too without knowing. Mind you, I’ve eaten kangaroo which is rather good when it’s well cooked.
This is fabulous – very creative! Thought we were going on a real tasting until we hit the beach 🙂 Really, what a great event & the art is very inspirational…plus the weather looks amazing (quite jealous). Enjoy your weekend!
It’s one of my favourite outdoor events, combining the beach and art. No ‘real’ tasting as such… more of an inspiration on a food theme.
The weather was great for a brief time in which I ran around to take photos. It got overcast very fast! Glad you’ve enjoyed it 🙂

Awesome! I like your thinking about the food theme… I tend to look for the same patterns when I’m observing artistic displays too.
How long will this display be there? Hoping we can catch it out in Dec…
Unfortunately only until 14 November. I’m crossing my fingers for good weather when you’re down here in December 🙂
So very cool, I must have that cheese grater!
That’s one of my favourites! Rusty and all.
How retro cool are the wayfarers on the beach!
I like that sculpture too. Reminds me of that 80s song, Boys of Summer!
Love it! I didn’t make it to the Tamarama end, so many thanks!
Thanks Tina! There’s a lot to cover, especially making your way through the crowds…
