World of Whisky’s Second Birthday & Ardbeg Galileo

World of Whisky celebrated their second birthday with a whisky sampling and the launch of the limited release Ardbeg Galileo. The specialist whisky store in Sydney’s Double Bay held a party on their premises offering guests and shoppers a taste of whiskies and nibbles to toast the occasion.

Dan Woolley, World of Whisky ambassador prepared “The Big Abble” cocktail, a take on the classic Manhattan using Chivas Regal 12 yo, Antica Formula sweet Italian vermouth with Bokers Bitters and Morello cherries – the name is a playful take on the Big Apple and the single malt, Aberlour which is part of the Chivas Brothers portfolio.

Also on taste during the afternoon was the range of The Glenlivet single malts, the Chivas Regal range and Overeem Whisky from Tasmania.

The star of the afternoon was the launch of the limited edition Ardbeg Galileo, a 12 year-old single malt created to celebrate Ardbeg’s experiment to mature whisky in space.

Ardbeg, in conjunction with US space research company NanoRacks LLC have been testing the effects of gravity on micro-organic compounds found at its distillery. In late 2011, vials of compounds known as ‘terpenes’ were launched into space via rockets from Kazakhstan, where they will remain on the International Space Station for at least two years. Similar vials are kept at the NanoRacks facility in Houston, Texas, and at the Ardbeg Distillery. The results of the experiment will not be know for another year.

Ardbeg Galileo (49% ABV) is a blend of various Ardbeg casks laid down in 1999, which include first and second fill bourbon casks and ex-Marsala wine casks from Sicily. Non-chill filtered, the whisky is sweet on the nose with notes of tropical fruits, spicy toffee and a “puff of soot”. On the palate, it is sweet with smoked apricots and a long smoky and sweet finish.
