Spectacular. Stunning. With a psychedelic 60s look.
The 2011 Lighting of the Sails transforms the Sydney Opera House into a living canvas with dazzling colour, shape and movement.
Part of Vivid Sydney, the festival that celebrates light, music and ideas, video projections are mapped onto the shapes of the sails to create a 3D effect. This is the work of Superbien, a creative French agency renowned for its lighting design with animation, photography and projections that are tailored to specific environments.
Now in its third year, the festival is popular with visitors, Sydneysiders and photographers vying for a vantage position.
Below are images of the Sydney Opera House like you’ve never seen it before.
Vivid Sydney runs from from 27 May to 13 June 2011, with the Lighting of the Sails commencing at 6.00 pm. Other highlights of the festival include 43 dazzling Lights On installations including the mesmerising Customs House display, FireDance, a live show of fire and music at Campbells Cove which runs hourly from 7pm to 11 pm, the Sony Lounge Pop Up Bar and the Vivid Sydney Night Markets at the Rocks on Friday and Saturday nights.

Fantastic photos! Would love to see this in the flesh one day. There are some very clever people in this world. I’m a big fan of the psychedelic patterns.

As good as photos can be, seeing it in person leaves you more in awe!
Wow – loving the photos! Can’t wait to check it out 😉
Enjoy it, Tina, and I hope you don’t get drenched in this weather!
What gorgeous photographs! I’m so jealous that you got to catch these before the weather took a torrential turn… I’m still waiting for it to clear up so I can get snap-happy down by the opera house as well 🙂 x
Thanks Mary. We just made it to see the Lighting of the Sails and a few Lights On sculptures before it poured with vengeance. Must bring umbrella next time!
Simply wow… I like the sense of movement in these pictures. Well done!
I’m glad the photos gave you an idea of the movement. There was a 3D crystal-like image that floated from one sail to another – amazing!
So pretty, like fireworks almost! 🙂
Spot on. One of the designs moved like fireworks, which made for a lot of oohs and aahs!
not very original, but I echo the prior ‘wows’ That is one impressive lighting display!
This is the 3rd year they do it and it’s a lot more ‘alive’ than previous years. Have you seen something similar in your travels? It would be great to see Superbien’s work elsewhere.
I was at the Opera House today and I’m still in awe everytime I go there. Can’t wait to go to the Lang Lang concert this month! 🙂
I think we tend to take it for granted living in Sydney but when we see something so spectacular, we’re reminded of how beautiful it is as a structure. Enjoy the concert! 🙂
