The call of the Mulled Wine drew us towards the night markets. Braving a chilly winter’s night to see the various events that make up the Vivid Sydney festival was well worth the effort. At the conclusion of the Fire Water spectacle, an announcement was made to lure the crowds towards the historical area of Sydney known as the Rocks.
The night markets were already in full swing.
Eager crowds lined up for a hot cup of mulled wine simmering in stainless steel pots.
$6 bought a spicy concoction that sent a wave of warmth on the inside with the comfort of a soft blanket.
With a refill costing $5, people returned for more as the night progressed.
There were chocolate dipped strawberries, delicately decorated.
And some from Lush Berries looking more like edible art than chocolates.
A portable wood fired pizza oven was popular with those who huddled in a corner waiting for their number to be called.
With a selection of four toppings and each pizza costing $10, tummies were filled with cheesy goodness.
Thai cuisine is always popular with outdoor food. This stand gave me a sudden craving for noodles.
The Spanish paella has become ubiquitous in these food events. There were two stands cooking different types of paellas.
I liked the Spanish flag with El Toro y El Kangaroo separated by a paellera.
Chinese food stands sold steamed buns among other specialities.
The Australian Corn Company was busy hammering sticks into steaming corn cobs.
The Gozleme stand had a large number of staff to meet the demands of the long queue that formed.
An opportunity to watch food being prepared always brings a smile to my face.
We shared a beef, cheese and spinach gozleme with a squeeze of lemon. Served hot and steamy, I can see why this Turkish speciality was a popular choice.
Wok action yielded Thai chicken with hokkien noodles in a box.
Spicy with a mild degree of heat went down well on the chilly night.
There were Mini Monet Cupcakes for sugary sweetness.
The giant Nutella jar drew attention to the crepe stand, a familiar sight that reminded me of Paris.
But my heart was set on these lonely macarons, peering from behind the closed doors of Baroque Bistro Bar and Patisserie.
Colourful cloths reminded me of the souks in Syria.
Handbags galore often evoke memories of bazaars in distant lands.
With our hunger tamed and our thirst for mulled wine satisfied, our night at the Rocks came to a close long before the Night Markets packed their bags and cleaned their woks.
What would you have chosen to eat at the Night Markets?
Looks great, especially the gozleme…yum.
Anil, the gozleme was delicious. Tempted to try a sweet variety next time!
I love Sydney and seeing all the food photos at The Rocks makes me homesick for this city in which I lived for 6 months. Have a chocolate covered berry for me, will ya?
I didn’t know you’ve lived in Sydney! In that case, a double chocolate coated berry for you! 🙂
I can smell the paella! What a great way to spend an evening. I’m visualising something like this for my town….
Cate, the paella always captures my interest too, particularly a seafood paella!
