The Sailors Club at Rose Bay recently played host to a wine tasting of Omrah by Plantagenet with winemaker Cath Oates. Guests were treated to the new summer release of white and rosé with matching canapés.
Omrah takes its name from a vineyard named after the SS Omrah which brought passengers from England to Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia in the early 1900’s. Omrah has been producing wines since 1989, starting with an unoaked chardonnay.

The new Omrah wines range has undergone an appealing makeover. The label and packaging have a white and blue styling which gives it a light and fresh vibe that goes well with the style of wines.
The Great Southern region in WA is famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, an area with a cool climate which is ideal for its aromatic character. Omrah Sauvignon Blanc 2012 has intense tropical flavours with a crisp clean acidity. It exhibits pungency of fruit as well as a floral character. The strong acidity in Sauvignon Blanc makes it good pairing with salty food as well as Japanese cuisine. The wine was served with freshly shucked Sydney Rock oysters.
Omrah Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012 combines perfume and tropical fruit from Sauvignon Blanc with the citrus notes from the Semillon into a well balanced wine that pairs well with seafood salad, bruschetta, and chicken Caesar salad, or simply with fish and chips.
Omrah’s new label and packaging
Omrah Chardonnay 2012 has characters of peach and lemon and displays pure fruit with no oak at all. Its yeasty notes add a little complexity while remaining fresh on the palate. The wine pairs well with shellfish, rich and creamy pasta dishes as well as light salads. Omrah Chardonnay was served with crabmeat and avocado sandwich, arancini and parmesan custard.
Omrah Rosé 2012 is a vibrant wine made with a blend of Tempranillo and Shiraz. The former gives it the fragrance and flavour of red fruits while the latter contributes to its fresh juiciness. The wine has red cherry aromas and ripe strawberry and raspberry flavours on the palate. Its crisp acidity gives it a little tang and a refreshingly dry finish that makes it a good match with smoked salmon, ripe strawberries and Asian cuisine. Omrah Rosé was served with sugar cured ocean trout on toasted brioche and serrano ham.
Mini blood orange float
The afternoon concluded with a mini blood orange float, fresh and zesty with a little sherbet on top.
