Great Australian Reds at Home Food & Wine Weekend
Renowned wine expert, Ned Goodwin MW and Judy Sarris, editor of Gourmet Traveller Wine presented a tasting of some Great Australian Reds at a masterclass held at Westfield Bondi Junction, Mezzanine Level 6.

The tasting began with Charles Heidseick champagne, made with 40% reserve wine with a average age of ten years, aged for 36 months on lees before moving on to three wine flights, predominantly Shiraz with one Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.
2011 Kangarilla Road Shiraz from McLaren Vale is a medium-bodied and savoury wine with some pepper and dark fruit aromas. Unlike many big bold Shiraz wines, it is easy drinking with a good balance between fruit and structure. with silky tannins and good length.
2011 Grant Burge Filsell Old Vine Shiraz from Barossa Valley is made from old vines which give a good concentration of flavour due to their mature root system. Full-bodied wine with good vinosity, the wine has a rounded mouthfeel with pepper and cinnamon coming form the ageing in a blend of American and French oak.
2012 Turkey Flat Vineyards Shiraz from the, Barossa Valley is pleasantly aromatic and aged in 100% French oak which is untraditional in the Barossa. The wine exhibits freshness and is therefore lighter bodied with good drinkability.
2010 Schild Estate Ben Schild Reserve Shiraz comes from one of the oldest vineyards in the Barossa Valley which has the strongest expression of terroir in Australia. This a big red, well structured, rich with dark fruit and fine tannins.
Malbec is originally a Bordeaux variety which moved to Cahors near the Lot river in Dordogne before being adoped by the Argentines. 2012 Bleasdale Generations Malbec from Langhorne Creek is a rounder and softer expression with black fruit, plums ans softer tannins. The wine has been aged in french oak for 12 months.
Also from Langhorne Creek, 2010 Bremerton Walter’s Reserve Cabernet is earthy, savoury and fresh with ripe flavours, full-body with medium tannins. Aged for two years mainly in French oak, the wine benefits from ageing as the tannins soften.
From the Clare Valley, 2010 Jim Barry The McRae Wood Shiraz exhibits floral aromas with a palate of sweet dark fruit. Medium weighted with fine tannins, the wine is fresh and balanced with good drinkability.
From Tyrrels Wines, 2012 Rufus Stone Shiraz from Heathcote comes from an ancient strip of Cambrian soil with high iron content which gives the wine a unique mineral character. The wine exhibits bold fruit such as dark plums with strong tannins on the palate.
2012 Tellurian Tranter Shiraz from Heathcote is made from a single vineyard. Tranter means from the earth and the wine has rich aromas of dark plum with spice making it an elegant Shiraz with fine tannins and great length.
