Glen Orrin 5 yo Blended Malt Review

Today we’re reviewing something a little different. Glen Orrin 5 yo is a blended Scotch whisky available through retailer ALDI as part of their newly-launched range of award-winning Scotch whiskies.

Glen Orrin 5 yo Blended Malt

Very little information is known about Glen Orrin 5 yo. It is a blended malt, aged for a minimum of five years and bottled at 40% ABV using single malt whiskies from the Highland and Speyside regions of Scotland. The whisky retails at $34.99 and has been awarded Silver Medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2015.

On the nose, raw grain character intermingles with hints of chocolate, butterscotch and a faint echo of citrus. The palate is smooth but lacks complexity being very thin with some chocolate, butterscotch and orange coming to the fore before they dissipate quickly. The finish is very short finish and indicative of a very young blend.

Glen Orrin 5 yo is more suited to a beginner starting on their whisky journey. It can be used mixed drinks but does not stand up well in whisky cocktails such as a whisky sour or old fashioned. At the affordable price of $34.99, it is not a major investment for someone contemplating an entry level whisky.

Among ALDI’s other whisky offerings, you’ll find Glen Marnoch Bourbon Cask Reserve Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky ($39.99), Glen Marnoch Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky ($44.99), Glen Marnoch 18 Year Old Highland Single Malt ($69.99), Highland Black 8 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky ($34.99) and Highland Earl Blended Scotch Whisky ($29.99).

ALDI whisky is offered as part of ALDI’s biweekly Special Buys which are available until stocks last.
