Cha Li Boi Opens in Bondi Junction

Cha Li Boi Yum Cha and Bar by Nahji Chu, aka Miss Chu opens next week in Bondi Junction.

Cha Li Boi

The Yum Cha hall experience in Bondi Junction will be serving fun, futuristic takes on traditional dishes that reflect Nahji Chu’s passion for clean eating, fine wines, sustainable produce and native ingredients.

Cha Li Boi is a 285 pax venue located above the East Leagues Club, home of the Roosters which has been gutted and transformed into a raw and conceptual space where the focus is on food along with good wines.

Cha Li Boi

The menu by chef John Leong (ex Billy Kwong) is a chance to  re-experience Yum Cha staples transformed with Nahji’s trademarks: a menu stacked with tongue-in-cheek names, served on a mixture of Batch, Mud and classic Chinese ceramics. Think Pacman Dumplings (pictured above), a series of four fine dumplings filled with sustainable scallop and scampi, duck a l’orange, vegan variations, prawn har gau and tempura eggplant on “hao sing affordability” a.k.a. mashed avocado; Tanned Leather Jacket, steamed dumplings filled with leather jacket fish, scallop and curried sweet pumpkin fashionably folded into a jacket shape with squid ink translucent skin; Ling My Bell, Goldfish shaped, orange tailed dumplings of Ling Fish and Bell mushrooms and Clawback Dumplings, Steamed King Crab legs with claws exposed.

You’ll also find a steamed free range Cha Li Pork Boa, Man Bun, a vegan slider of tempura okra, shiitake, organic tofu and kohlrabi purslane and Phoenix Claws aka chicken’s feet.

In collaboration with Chui Lee Luk, Nahji has designed certified gluten free skins and dumplings featuring native ingredients including karkalla – a native succulent, and includes other ingredients such as saltwort and warrigal greens.

The wine list is compiled by sommelier Paula Scholes (Miss Pearls) of Madame Brussels (Melbourne) and features small producer and high end wines at accessible prices. A Cart Bar will also be available, serving up bubble-tea cocktails alongside fruit cups and non-alcoholic organic teas, all curated by the Bubble-ologist.

Cha Li Boi opens May 9, 2017.
