Bavarian Bier Café: Bondi Beach

Walking along the Campbell Parade stretch of Bondi Beach with its busy strip of shops and eateries, I can’t help but feel that this part of the city no longer belongs to me. As a resident of Sydney, I have come to view Bondi Beach as the domain of backpackers and transient dwellers and have often pondered if other Sydneysiders feel a little distanced from their iconic beach.

Yet I can’t help but marvel at the transformation it undergoes on a semi-regular basis, particularly when it comes to food and drink.

Bavarian Bier Café is located along the bustling Campbell Parade. Strolling along, you can’t miss the eye-grabbing dark interior set against blue signage or the outdoor area with long benches lining up the footpath.

Inside the café with antler light fittings, mirrors and menus framed by dark wood panels, there is a choice of seating from tall bar stools and tables, to intimate booths even a long bench table between the bar and the kitchen.

The bar occupies a sizeable part of the floor with overhanging beer steins like chandeliers.

There is a good selection of beers to tempt even non-beer drinkers like me.

The Hofbräu Dunkel is the darker beer, slightly malty with a rich caramel flavour. Stiegl Goldbräu is a lighter beer, golden in colour with a mild and refreshing taste.

The menu is contemporary European and the kind of fare you’d expect from Germany, Austria and Hungary with Pretzels, Schnitzels and Goulash soup, and a touch of Italy with pastas, fish and seafood.

Service is very friendly and the staff are cheerful as they attend to patrons, though they don’t miss a chance to entice you to order more food or drink.

This stretch of Campbell Parade may still feel more like a backpacker’s haven than a local strip but here at the Bavarian Bier Café, you get a little piece of Bavaria along the shores of Bondi Beach.

And this is what living in Sydney is all about.
