When it comes to dining out, Sydney is spoilt for choice. From top end restaurants that woo their clientele with world class creations to cheap and cheerful places to eat around town, Sydney offers a smorgasbord of dining experiences and cuisines from all over the world.
When visitors come from afar to our fair city, we too can be at a loss in choosing where to take them. At the Australian Heritage Hotel, you can give them an experience they will long remember.
The Australian Heritage Hotel
Located in the historic area known as The Rocks and boasting a reputation as the oldest continuously licensed pub in the City of Sydney, the Australian Heritage Hotel serves Australian food with a twist.
While pizza makes up the bulk of the menu, this is not pizza as you know it. Your visitors from abroad can choose a Pepper Kangaroo, BBQ Emu or Saltwater Crocodile Pizza. There are less adventurous toppings and a small section devoted to “Not Pizzas” with a choice of fish, chicken, veal. Add over 100 types of Australian beers, pizzas paired with an ale, or wines by the bottle and the glass and you’ll have them singing our praises.
Half and Half: Pepper Kangaroo Pizza (back) Salt Water Crocodile Pizza (front)
Our Swedish friends were most keen to try a “true blue” Aussie pizza. The Pepper Kangaroo Pizza ($22.90 for large) turned out to be a crowd pleaser. Marinated in native peppers and served with roasted capsicums and native berries, it has a slightly sour/sweet flavour combination which complemented the kangaroo meat.

Salt Water Crocodile Pizza
The Salt Water Crocodile Pizza ($24.90 for large) made with Thai herbs and spicy coconut cream was also a big hit with the Swedes. Did it taste like chicken? It didn’t, but we could not compare it to the flavour of any other meat.
If you’re looking for an experience that will get your visitors from abroad talking, the Australian Heritage Hotel in the Rocks offers a casual meal in relaxed surrounds. The pizzas are best enjoyed sitting outside the pub, al fresco, with your drink of choice then walking them off after dinner as you explore this part of Sydney on foot.

Have had both these pizzas and they are quite yum. I like the duck with plum sauce pizza best. 🙂
We had other pizzas on the night but they weren’t much to rave about. They were out of emu unfortunately, but the salt water croc was the best!
Sounds like a menu that could be found only in Australia! 🙂
Yes… Not that you’d find it everywhere! 🙂
Think I would have to warm up a bit to the whole kangaroo idea, but have to say that the pizza looks delicious! 🙂
I’ve eaten kangaroo meat before and when it’s cooked properly, it’s very good and not tough at all. In pizza, it’s a lot more palatable so I wouldn’t dismiss it 🙂
I cannot wait to move to Australia (hoping for September!), get settled in, then jet down to Sydney to meet you AND explore this lovely city. 🙂
Krista, that would be an absolute pleasure to show you around! 🙂
