Australian Whisky at Black Penny, Surry Hills

Australian whisky has been gaining global recognition in recent years, winning coveted awards both locally and internationally. Interest in locally made spirits has also grown with the rise of local craft distillers producing quality products.

At Black Penny bar in Surry Hills, Australian whisky is taking centre focus. “We like Aussie whisky, and we like to promote it,” Mike McGrath, co-owner of Black Penny explains. “We have one of the largest Australian whisky collections including some rare whiskies.”

Black Penny has always stood by its ethos to feature and promote Australian producers and independent distillers, be it in craft beer, wine and spirits. Australian whisky is a natural progression.

Currently Black Penny stocks 29 Australian whisky expressions on the back bar with another six on their way. You can find Starward Whisky from Melbourne, The Big Black Cock which we featured in our Top 10 Australian Craft Spirits from Mt Uncle Distillery in Cairns, Overeem and Lark Whisky from Tasmania, Crazy Uncle Moonshine from Perth, Sullivans Cove French Oak, Bakery Hill and Hellyers Road Peated whisky.

Heartwood Beagle Batch 2 and Bat Out of Hell from Tasmania , Dobson’s Empire 8, a single malt cask strength 60% ABV triple distilled from Dobson Distillery in Kentucky (NSW) along with Dobson’s Belle Epoque Single Malt Cask Strength 60% and William McHenry’s Three Capes 10 YO Unpeated to name a few. Prices start from $9 up to $39 for Heartwood.

“We will start by showcasing Australian whisky then do education sessions, “Bar Manager Alex Gilmour explains.

Black Penny recently hosted an afternoon tasting of the range of Belgrove Whisky with master distiller Peter Bignell including the newly-released Belgrove Peated Rye Whisky and Belgrove Oat Whisky. We can look forward to private functions, whisky tastings, whisky flights, and a later on, a cocktail list featuring Australian whisky.
