Papi Chulo Manly

Papi Chulo celebrated its first birthday this week, and it was smokin’.

Located at the Manly ferry terminal, a mere 30 minute picturesque ferry ride from Circular Quay, Merivale’s other waterside venue blends a rustic seaside décor with a weathered sea shack feel at an enviable location meres steps away from the water.

The Cravado cocktail was served on arrival, a refreshing frozen mix of vodka, coconut water, lychees, fresh mint and lime and made for fine sipping as the sun went down. This was followed by canapés which included Smoked Hot Wings with comeback sauce, Empanada of Wild Greens and Heidi Raclette and the delectable Hashbrowns with Yasa Caviar.

Head chefs Patrick Friesen and Christopher Hogarth presented a feast from the sea and the land. A Ceviche Bar was set up celebrating ingredients freshness and flavours. This included oysters, Southern rock lobster ceviche with coconut and mango; Isaan style scampi ceviche; Hokkaido scallop with grilled corn and finger lime; Yellowfin tuna and Hiramasa kingfish sashimi; Hiramasa kingfish ceviche with pineapple and jalapeño.

Papi Chulo is renowned for its signature Papi Chulo BBQ platter, an assortment of smoked meats with big flavours that release your inner carnivore. The aroma from the Carvery was tantalising and the open kitchen was resplendent with Smoked suckling pig, Smoked kranskys; Maple black pepper free range pork belly;  Rangers valley wagyu f1 brisket; Grass fed short rib and Kurobuta pulled pork shoulder. The meats are everything the side of tender, juicy, sweet and abounding with flavour – the kind that make it difficult to choose a favourite.

Much like Coogee Pavilion Rooftop, Papi Chulo invites casual long lunches, sundowners and good times. If you haven’t made it across the bridge yet, it is well worth the journey and your first taste of the BBQ platter will not be your last.
