High Tea at The Gallery Sheraton on the Park

At The Gallery on Sheraton of the Park, the high tea stand is shaped like a tree, echoing the metallic sculpture that lines one wall and brings the roots of Hyde Park into the luxury hotel.

High Tea Tree

The latest High Tea menu comes on a modern designed three tier stand with one savoury tier, two sweet tiers and scones to follow.

Savoury Tier

The savoury tier is a pure delight, a generous offering of tasty quiches and sandwiches to enjoy with sparkling wine. A dome of cucumber and creamy egg on pumpernickel with amaranth tempts to be picked up first followed with the chicken with creamy avocado and pesto on dark rye. The moreish smoked salmon goes all Mediterranean served bruschetta style with sorrel, black olives and cherry tomatoes and radish.

From the warm selection, start with the toasted pastrami sandwich with melted Camembert, cranberry and onion jam on sourdough bread. The mini quiche of salmon and spinach has a tasty and salty whipped feta on top that cuts through the richness of the fish.

Middle Tier

The highlight of the middle tier is the white peach & vanilla panna cotta, served creme brulee style in a shallow ramekin. Equally tempting is the lime tart with a soft meringue whipped ever so lightly and sitting atop the pastry, with white chocolate with pomegranate and floral notes from the flower jelly.

Top Tier

The top tier offers a light and buttery plum chiffon cake with cinnamon and mascarpone and a totally decadent and rich caramel pudding, krokant parfait with salted caramel sauce and a chocolate shard. The raspberry biscuit is a little underwhelming.

Scones

Scones are served separately after you’ve had a chance to enjoy the three tiers of tasty morsels. Orange, dark chocolate and plain scones are sweet and crumbly waiting to be lathered with Devonshire cream and strawberry jam.

Italian Almond Tea

When it comes to tea, the selection includes the Watte range which takes you on a journey through tea gardens of Ceylon’s central highlands with strong, robust tea from the mid country up to rich, rounded tea from the high country, and delicate subtle tea from the highest elevations. The UDA Watte is a rich and lively black tea with an intense aroma and well-rounded flavour. But it is the Italian Almond Tea that steals the show, a rich black tea that is nutty with a delicious almond finish.

High teas are always a decadent affair reminding us to take a little time out for ourselves to enjoy a British tradition that has endured time.

The High Tea tree costs $64 per person, or $75 per person with Domaine Blanc De Blancs, or you could go all out with High Tea rendezvous with Ruinart Blanc De Blancs at $85 per person.

If you’re looking for a more elaborate experience, the weekend High Tea is presented buffet style with a large offering of sweet and savoury bites.
