Hartsyard in Newtown Opens Under New Leadership

Hartsyard in Enmore has opened with a fresh beginning and a new dynamic duo, Jarrod Walsh and Dot Lee, at the helm offering share-friendly plates and two set menus available as vegetarian and vegan options.

 Hartsyard Newtown

Hartsyard’s head chef Jarrod Walsh (QT Sydney and Automata) and real-life partner Dot Lee took over from founders Gregory Llewellyn and Naomi Hart in December with a view of taking the eatery further into its lighter, technique-driven direction, after graduating from famed fried chicken joint to refined Hartsyard 2.0 last year.

The 50-seat space now houses new black and white tattoo-inspired artworks by local artist Isabel Williams, building on last year’s refurb which introduced crisp whites mixed with oak joinery and tan upholstery, screens with fresh pops of greenery and pendant lighting.

Guests to the new Hartsyard can expect a new à la carte offering featuring 13 share-friendly plates and two set menus ($75 and $95)  available in vegetarian and vegan.

New menu additions include stone fruit with smoked sheep’s milk yoghurt and Japanese yukari shiso, mix-your-own Geraldton kingfish tartare with seaweed chips, and Clarence River baby octopus marinated and grilled with roasted peppers and smoked charcoal potatoes. Hartsyard’s go to deep-fried duck also makes a reappearance with a new rotating seasonal garnish.

The new drinks list, by bartender Paddy O’Rourke (The Gretz, Bulletin Place, Dead Ringer), champions beers from local only brewery mates, sake and cocktails such as the Stonefruit Slipper with stone fruit vodka, maraschino cherry and lemon sherbet or The Pepito with spiced coconut rum, mango, yoghurt, honey and pistachio.

Hartsyard is open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday and Sundays for lunch ($55 set menu), with Saturday lunch to follow in February.
