Golden Age Cinema and Bar

The Golden Age Cinema and Bar is set to open in Surry Hills at the heritage-listed Paramount Building.

What was once home to Paramount Pictures offices, the space has undergone loving restoration and redevelopment combining a café at the front atrium of the building operated by the owners of Ruben Hills, a new outpost of Tokyo Bike at the back and an intimate movie theatre at the basement.

Descend the stairs and enter a different world that pays homage to the golden era of the big screen.

The Golden Age Cinema is located  in  the  old  basement theatrette for the building, a space that was  used to screen film reels to service women in World War II. Today, it houses a working 60-seat theatre with 1940s era cinema chairs hailing from Zurich.

The Golden Age Cinema program offers a program of classics along with contemporary films curated by radio broadcaster Kate Jinx. On Tuesday night, admission will be for the same price as a movie ticket was in the year of the film’s release. For the 1933 movie, Duck Soup, tickets will cost five cents, and the cinema will present sophisticated Saturday and Sunday afternoon matinee screenings.

The Golden Age Bar is designed for pre and post cinema enjoyment but can be a destination in its own right. The drinks menu includes Australian wines and a list of classic cocktails with some drinks that are a tribute to some films. Asahi beer is on tap and another will rotate through a select range of craft beers.

The food offerings have steered away from the ubiquitous cinema food and offer more grown up treats such as Director’s Cut sandwiches, charcuterie board, and Golden Age sundaes. Expect Film and Food Matching where the Golden Age bar and guest chefs will pair food with films.

Golden Age Cinema and Bar officially opens on 6 September 2013.
