If you think you’ll be having a vertical tasting of the core range, think again. Five limited and numbered single barrel select tequilas, that have been distilled exclusively for Bar Patrón by Rockpool in Sydney are what’s on offer.

The five expressions of the Bar Patrón Barrel Select Tequila Flights menu are made up of reposado and añejo tequilas, all single barrels and aged in different types of oak.

Batch 257 is a 7-month-old tequila aged in a Hungarian oak cask. Little is known about the type of cask but Ryan Gavin, Rockpool Dining Group National Bar Manager hints at it being possibly Hungarian sweet wine such as Tokay. The tequila has aromas of vanilla, honey sweetness and soft oak while on the palate, roasted agave with honey sweetness, a citrus undertone leads to a mild and pleasant bitter finish.

Batch 262 is also 7 months old and has been aged in French Limousin oak cask. Ex Cognac barrels have much tighter pores and give the tequila a buttery cooked agave note with sweet fine oak finish. Subtle sweetness on the nose leads to a dryer style on the palate than its predecessor with loads of pepper and warm spices, even some stone fruit and orchard kernel. Batch 262 is an elegant sipping tequila that you wouldn’t want to mix.

Batch 1A is a 7-month-old reposado aged in a second fill ex-bourbon cask. The bourbon influence is evident and the tequila starts to lose some its fresh agave notes. Vanilla and baking spices play on the nose followed by a war spice notes on the palate with a citrus note.
“Rich agave with light vanilla and citrus”

Batch 191 is a 23-month-old añejo also aged in ex-bourbon cask. The extra age gives it a more nutty and oaky character. It’s a move towards whiskey territory with a sweeter and richer palate complemented by a fine balance of oak.

Batch 238 is a 13-month-old añejo tequila aged in ex American and French cask blend, a single barrel hogshead constructed to be half American oak and half French limousin. Sweet vanilla, raisin and roasted agave are at the heart of this expression along with a sweeter toffee note from the bourbon influence and a long satisfying finish.
