The tour of Sydney’s Haymarket with Dan Hong was merely a teaser. One of the restaurants visited briefly on the midnight feast was Arisun, a family owned and run Korean-Chinese fusion restaurant.
Arisun, Haymarket, Sydney
Hite Beer & Kimchi
Located at one end of a large complex that is 1 Dixon Street, the 23 year old restaurant has seen a recent renovation with brass columns and a quasi industrial vintage look. Order a beer, in this case, Hite Ice Point Korean beer and you will get a dish of spicy kimchi, on the house.
Sun’s Fried Chicken with Soy Sauce
The place is known for the best Korean Fried Chicken, or KFC on crack, which you chow on and wash down with 4.5 litre draft beer or Soju. It comes with a choice of Sun’s Original Fried Chicken, Sun’s Fried Chicken with Soy Sauce, and Sun’s Sweet and Spicy Fried Chicken, the latter two being a little on the sweet side. At $30, they’re large servings for two people, particularly if you order another dish.
Flame-Grilled Pork Strips
The other go-to dish is the Flame-Grilled Pork Strips ($30), hot, spicy, smoky, and delicious. Don’t think of any diet you may be attempting to start. The pork strips are fatty and totally addictive.
Spicy Seafood and Abalone Hotpot
The Spicy Seafood and Abalone Hotpot ($48) presents well but is somewhat underwhelming. While the broth is spicy, it is watered down and doesn’t impart much flavour to the crab, abalone, squid, prawns and mussels lacking that oomph that makes it enjoyable. The fish is forgettable.
There are two things you need to remember when dining at Arisun. The first is to bring a big appetite. The dishes come in large portions, and if you’re ordering protein, there’s only so much you can eat, the rest you can take home.
The other, is that the restaurant is a casual style of eatery, so don’t expect much ambience or to linger over your hot pot. Service is fast, so is the turnover but the food will bring you back.
Arisun is also known for its Black bean Noodles ($11), a large selection of hot pots and Seafood Pancake ($20). But that’s for next time.
