World Malbec Day on April 17 is an international celebration of Argentina’s most iconic of grapes.
Now in its second year and with the support of the Argentine Chancellery, the event sees special activities, tastings and a number of celebrations held around the world including Australia, the United States, Spain, Armenia, South Africa and Panama.
World Malbec Day at the Oak Barrel
To celebrate the occasion, the Oak Barrel in Sydney held a tasting of two Malbec wines, Finca Filchman Misterio Malbec and Rutini Estate Malbec in conjunction with the Australian supplier WoCA, Wines of Chile & Argentina.
The Malbec grape is grown in high altitude vineyards of Argentina. The climate with its fresh air, sunshine and cool nights contributes to a medium-bodied wine that is deep in colour and rich in fruit flavour.
L-R: Finca Flichman Misterio Malbec and Rutini Malbec
Finca Flichman winery was established in 1873 and was purchased in 1998 by Sogrape, a leading wine producing company in Portugal renowned for Mateus wine. The vineyards are located in Mendoza and occupy 950 hectares at varying altitudes. Finca Flichman Misterio Malbec 2010 ($18.95) is made from 100% Malbec from a young vineyard. The wine is aged in oak for three months followed by four months in the bottle before it is released. Deep red bodied, the wine has plum notes and a hint of spice which make it easy to drink alone or as an accompaniment to food.
Rutini is one of the oldest wineries of Argentina, founded in 1885 in Mendoza by the Rutini family who emigrated from Italy. Rutini 2008 Malbec ($44.95) is made with 100% Malbec grapes from old vines that are approximately 70 years old. The wine is aged in oak for 12 months which results in a more complex wine with a medium body and soft tannins. This is an elegant wine that ages well and can be cellared for up to 4 to 5 years.
