After much anticipation of mysterious renovations behind closed doors, Pizzavelly Italian Kitchen welcomed invited guests on the evening of 18 February 2011 to the launch of their restaurant in the beachside suburb of Clovelly.
A red Fiat 500 Bambino outside the shop added a touch of retro nostalgia to the event where guests gathered to taste a range of authentic pizza and Italian dishes.

Behind the striking marble stone façade, you take a trip back in time to Italy in the 1950s. You won’t find chequered tablecloths or a mundane green-white-red colour scheme.
A vibrant red feature wall with a black and white canvas leaps out with a Via Veneto scene in Rome straight from La Dolce Vita.

Classic Italian melodies of the 50s and 60s are right at home with framed photographs of Vespas, Fiat, Lambretta cars and poster girls of that romantic era.

From the retro-styled Coca Cola fridges to the vintage drink glasses, no detail has been spared in this new eatery that brings authentic flavours of Italy to the village-like atmosphere of Clovelly.

Pizzavelly Italian Kitchen is the partnership between Francesco Golino and Martin Hartridge whose vision is to bring a casual and welcoming dining experience to Clovelly.
Francesco Golino is the main man behind the kitchen, bringing authentic Italian dishes and flavours of his native towns of Caserta (north of Naples) and Fondi (south of Rome) to the table. He started cooking in his teenage years, learning about food and traditional cooking techniques in Italy before the family emigrated to Sydney in the 1970s. An experienced restaurateur, his previous ventures include Portobello in Kensington, The Italian Connection in Sydney’s George Street and Rossini in Viña del Mar in Chile.

Add a range of careers spanning general nursing, nutrition, self-employment and ventures in the theatrical business and entertainment industry, Martin is also experienced in theatre restaurants such as Kaos in Ramsgate and Frankenstein’s in Liverpool.

Pizzavelly prides itself on genuine Italian flavours and techniques. The pizza dough is made daily on the premises using a combination of ingredients and techniques that have been in Francesco’s family for many years.
It takes just 3 minutes for the pizza to cook in the oven once it has been prepped.
The range of pizzas available for dine-in and takeaway include L’Originale, the original pizza from Napoli that started it all as well as popular choices such as Napoletana with anchovies, Al Pesto with artichokes and roasted capsicums and Greed is Good, the tribute for meat lovers. There are four vegetarian options on the menu including the Pizzavelly Special and the tasty Garlic Pizza which satisfies garlic lovers.

Francesco & Martin look like they know what they’re doing. The space is cute and the pizzas look delish!
They certainly do, and the food speaks for itself. I love the retro look and feel of the 1950s, it comes from watching too many old movies!
We drove past here the other day on the way to the beach. It looked good from the outside. The pizza bases look scrumptious. Nice photos.
The exterior is certainly eye-catching! The full range of pizzas and toppings isn’t what you see in these photos – they’re much more elaborate. I will write a review of both the Pizzavelly and Italian Kitchen menu soon.
Finally, we get to see what you’ve been up to all week! Love the concept of Pizzavelly, you can never go wrong with pizza!
As I promised! 🙂 Actually, I am fussy about pizza and have seen many do the wrong thing (I don’t write about them) so I’m thrilled to have a place to go for casual dining or takeaway. The garlic pizza here is really addictive!

I can only comment on my personal experience at Pizzavelly. The decor is clean, fresh with a taste of class which is perfect if you want to drop in for coffee and cake or if you want to dine in. To top up the exquisite food Italian food and pizza they also offer no corkage – well I can certainly say that I will be coming back.

Hi Sarah. I agree the no corkage is an advantage, add quality ingredients and fresh flavours, and I can see this spot quickly becoming a favourite to many people.

I was just wondering if Pizzavelly has gluten free pasta or pizza bases? Sadly with my food allergy to wheat & gluten, this is the only way I can enjoy good italian food still!
Hi Zoe – I asked the owners about gluten free, at this point in time, they’re keeping an eye out on requests. If there is enough demand for it, they will consider it in the future.
Looks like a cool (& delicious) place – love the nostalgic touch, not to mention the pizzas look to die for. Now if I could only get a ride in that Fiat…too fun.
Tuula, you should see some of the other pizzas they make, like the Pizzavelly Special! That Fiat was a lot of fun to have on opening night. I’d love to have one!
What a cute pizza place! I’d love to visit.
The decor is captivating, isn’t it! Always great to have a good ambience to match the food.
