In Japan, Izakayas are essentially Japanese down-home taverns with a menu of small dishes for snacking while drinking. The latest addition to the Surry Hills scene, Goros on Mary Street certainly captures that spirit.

The interior of Goros is filled with a mish-mash of Japanese paraphernalia such as traditional kimonos, family photos, souvenirs and a meneki-neko figurine (lucky cat). There are various seating arrangements to accommodate patrons as well as two private rooms. The bar serves draught/bottle beers, wines, cocktails with a twist and a selection of Japanese sake served by 90 ml, 180ml and 300ml.
The menu features Japanese traditional street food and are all delivered in small ready-to-eat-serving – no cutting or sharing involved, Goro, the owner, calls it ‘selfish food’. For lunchtime, bento boxes ($15), hand roll sushi, sashimi, donburi of the day are also available.
Slightly chilled sake served in ochoko welcomed the guests.
A sumptuous selection of the Goros food menu served were fried cuttlefish ($12), gyoza pork ($12), karaage chicken ($15), fried crab sandwich ($5 each), octopus balls, takoyaki ($12), tempura prawns ($18), tempura vegetables ($14) and pork ribs, chilli, madarin ($15).
Asahi Lager ($9) was a popular choice including cocktails (all $17) such as Goros Bellini – (peach infused shochu, melon, hibiscus, sparkling wine, citrus rim), Sanchez does Kyoto – (Herredura tequila, ume-shu, agave, fresh lime, wasabi salt rim) and Sake-tini – Belvedere vodka, Tengumai sake elderflower liqueur, cucumber)
Goro is a Japanese national who, after an all expenses paid trip to Sydney as part of his winnings from a famous Japanese game show, instantly fell in love with Surry Hills and decided to open his very own bar, something that reminded him of home in Tokyo.
Goros on Mary Street is here for those looking for a fun night and to bring the late night party to Surry Hills. Kampai!
