Bloody Mary’s, Darlinghurst

There’s something about Bloody Mary’s. An obsession for the drink led to the opening of Blood Mary’s in Darlinghurst with a solid list of creative Blood Mary’s to tempt and satisfy with one very special ingredient: all the tomato juice is blended fresh, in house using their own recipe.

Bloody Mary’s is the brainchild of owner Cinta Rockey which she runs with her husband Jeremy. Together, they have created a vibrant and casual venue, part bar, part American style diner serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

There is seating indoors, outdoors and along a cosy courtyard that catches the morning and early afternoon sun with a retractable roof if the weather is unkind.

The decor is accented some with red, white and blue with lounges, banquettes with a communal circular table fitted out with astroturf cubes in the courtyard. The venue is available for functions and the courtyard with a retractable roof can accommodate 50 persons.

Hungover? In need of hair of the dog, or just plain hungry? Let’s start with the Bloody Mary’s.

With the secret in house-made tomato juice, you’re in for a taste sensation like no other. The freshness, texture and flavour of the juice enhance the drinks and are most like a whole food. Don’t be alarmed that the colour of the drink is paler than you know. This mix has no additives and packs a punch.

The Classic Bloody Mary ($14) with Ketel One Vodka is savoury with a good hit of spice and a good kick. Just what you need to get started. The Don Julio Blanco Tequila is on show in the Bloody Maria ($16) with lime and celery garnish.  The two drinks are full of flavour but for an extra kick, you can add more heat from the chilli wall sauces such as Tabasco, Frank’s RedHot or Hot Samoan Boys.

On the other extreme, don’t miss the Bloody Caesar ($22) which is the only Bloody Mary on the list that does not feature the housemade tomato juice. Here Clamato juice and vodka are served with cos lettuce, shrimp and bacon.

The star of the menu is the Bloody Hell ($25) made with chilli-infused vodka served with a shrimp, slider and spicy buffalo wing. Surprisingly, it doesn’t have the same spicy kick as the Bloody Cesar but here you’re left to create your own version of hell with the condiments.

In addition to the signature Bloody Mary’s the drinks list has a range of cocktails, wines, cider and beers with Asahi on tap.

Bloody Marys, DarlinghurstThe Hangover Cure

Food doesn’t take backstage to the drink with quality ingredients that shine through. The Hangover Cure with Spicy Baked Beans, Bacon, Chorizo, Poached Eggs on Sourdough Toast ($25) lives up to its name with perfectly soft poached eggs, flavoursome chorizo, fresh beans that are sweet and spicy and crispy bacon plus five half slices of sourdough toast. Share it between two or just indulge ina guilt-free breakfast with the Bloody Hell Mary.
