Annata, Crows Nest

Step into the newly-opened Annata in Crows Nest and you might think you have been transported to a cosy corner of Europe. With its arched windows, dark tones and sleek fit out with high tables and exposed brick, Annata reminds you of European wine bars that you stumble into for an aperitivo and end up staying for dinner. A curb side dining area invites al fresco dining in summer, adding to that touch of European flair.

Annata, Crows Nest

Annata is the first venture by former bartender at Eau de Vie Bar and Rockpool Bar & Grill, Christian Blair. The restaurant derives its name from an Italian wine term that refers to year and vintage.

The menu by Chef Jimmy Richardson whose previous experience includes The Bridge Room and Cafe Paci, is designed for sharing. Eclectic combinations feature on the plate with the likes of Scallops with hazelnut, mushrooms, chamomile and guanciale, and Lamb Shoulder Tartare with pepperade, sage and dried lactose.

The food is complemented by a 70+ strong wine list by Richard Healy, sommelier at Rockpool Bar & Grill. The list, which features many wines by the glass, celebrates small producers and new wave Australian winemakers alongside French, Italian and New Zealand vintners.

As a restaurant with a wine focus, it’s reassuring to know that Christian Blair has not retired his cocktail expertise. Much like the kitchen, the drinks are designed to embrace seasonality, produce and creativity.

The 12 strong cocktail list is about invention and technique, exactly what you would expect from one of Australia’s top bartenders. Take El Rubor, a perfectly crafted with drink Moscatel Pisco, Cocchi Vermouth, apricot brandy and orange citrate, stirred and served in a chilled, elegant Nick and Nora glass. Or The Hive Mind with beurre noisette infused Elijah Craig with leatherwood honey and xocolatl bitters, just right for an after dinner drink.

Annata delivers creative and flavousome dishes that excite with thoughtful wine selections and killer cocktails. If you live on the south side of the city, get to Annata before the locals realise what an amazing restaurant is now in their midst.
