Standing in the queue to order at Chur Burger in Surry Hills feels a little awkward. Equally uneasy is sitting down on the casual furniture waiting for a burger to be served.
Chur Burger, Surry Hills
What was once Warren Turnbull‘s two hatted restaurant, Assiette, and the subject of many memorable dinners over the years and an unforgettable truffle menu degustation is now a burger shack. Gone are the Fornasetti plates on the wall and mood lighting. The indoor fitout has an outdoor feel with splashes of bright paint on the walls.
With Sydney gripped by the burger craze and fast food, chefs are swapping fine dining to what is termed as more “approachable” dining.
The Kitchen
The Chur Burger menu keeps it simple. All burgers cost $10, sides are $5, snacks and sweets are $10 and there’s a host of addons if you wish. A modest range of wine, beer and spirits is served.
Beef Burger
The Grilled Beef Burger is simply the bomb. Oozing with melted cheese, a thick and flavoursome patty, tomato jam, mustard mayo and pickles.
Lamb Burger
Equally satisfying is the Grilled Lamb Burger, with mint sauce, feta, red onion, aioli,
Chips with Chilli Salt
while a bowl of chips with chilli salt is difficult to resist. The burgers are tasty, generously sized and offer good value for money. In short, this is not a burger that will leave you hungry.
At the time of visit, albeit an odd time around 4pm on a Saturday, few people were dining but on every other occasion, the place has packed a crowd.
Unlike the hype of another burger, the popularity of Chur Burger is well justified.
