The Sicilian Cart in Agrigento

The Sicilian Cart or Carretto Siciliano is a common sight around tourist attractions in Sicily. The horse and cart form part of the folklore of Sicilian culture with the carretto often painted in bright and colourful illustrations that depict historical events in Sicily.

During festivals, they often form part of processions and the horses end up as ornately decorated as the carts they pull.

This traditional Sicilian Cart was spotted near the entrance to the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento. The sign says, “Dare l’offerta per la foto al cavallo Marco Grazie” which is translated to, “Please give an offer for the horse Marco.”

On that hot day in September, neither Marco nor his owner were in the mood for photographs. They both looked way too comfortable resting under the shade of the parasol.
