It’s not often that you take a leisurely stroll along the promenade of one of Sydney’s popular surfing beaches and find a Rubik’s cube washed up on the sand. This colourful piece of art is no optical illusion. It lies on the shores of Maroubra Beach, ten kilometres south-east of central Sydney. A little mystery surrounds the sudden appearance of this retro object d’art. Rumour has it that the block of concrete was painted overnight by local artists.

What are the dimensions of the cube? The slope of the beach and the gulls make it difficult to judge. I love this kind of ‘guerilla’ art, ie people reclaiming spaces!
Daniel: It’s quite a large structure, probably about 5 feet tall. I’ll have to stand beside it next time and report back!
Very Cool. I used to love the Rubicks Cube as a kid. I could actually do it. My mom showed me how and I amazed all of my friends. Now whenever I try I can almost get it all except for the final few moves, I just can’t remember the pattern to finish it off:(
