The Venetian island of Murano is not short on restaurants and trattorias serving local fare with enchanting views of the lagoon. But when an island-hopping schedule involving Murano, Burano and Torcello doesn’t allow for a leisurely lunch, there is always the option of a quick snack.
In the shadow of the Basilica Dei Santi Maria e Donato, we stop at a modest bar. A bar in Italy isn’t a watering hole as we know it but a casual establishment serving food and drink, either at a stand up counter or sitting at tables. We order a couple of piadine and coffees.
Piadina is a type of Italian flat bread from the region of Romagna. Made with flour, yeast, salt, sugar and traditionally pig lard, this simple fare is an alternative to heavier breads that can weigh you down while on the move.
The presentation of the piadina somewhat remind me of the Arabic flat bread with melted Syrian string cheese.
Piadina con bresaola, rucola e grana comes with thinly sliced cured meat, rocket leaves and grana cheese with a good bite. The bread is lightly toasted, the fillings are warm and the cheese is slightly melted. Piadina mediterranea is filled with prosciutto crudo (ham) and mozzarella.
When it comes to quick meals in Italy, there are always options for fast food that don’t include pizza. Our piadine hit the right spot. Light and appetising, and a welcome alternative to the thick dough of a focaccia or the ubiquitous panino.

I didn’t realize piadinas were so thin. The ones I find here in Canada are a bit thicker 🙂
Jen, it’s probably like pizza. It’s much thinner in Italy than we have here!
Yum! I miss those little Italian street sandwiches. We used to live in Italy and went to the Venice area often, although we never made it over to Murano. Found you via Wanderfood Wednesday!
Hi Myscha and welcome! I would love to live in Italy for a while. So much to experience and learn about food!
that looks fantastic! i WANT ONE!
Thanks!
Ohhh, such lovely memories you brought back with this sandwich. 🙂 Driving through Italy it was my favorite emergency food at gas stations – warm and toasty, the cheese all melty. 🙂
Hi Krista, I’m glad I brought you back some lovely memories. Food tend to do that to me as well!
Yum! These could inspire a trip to Italy!
Hi Nicole, they surely made me want to go back! 🙂
Oh these look delicious, thin and crispy with just the right amount of the right ingredients. YUM!
Cate, I love how thin it is yet every bite packs a lot of taste!
Wow, it looks beautiful in Murano, and the fare there looks absolutely delicious. I may have to make a trip all the way over to Italy just for a bite. Yum! 🙂
Hi Stephanie, Murano is a lovely island but if you do go, try to visit Burano. It’s so pretty that you’ll find it difficult to leave!
These look out of this world! I’m starving.
Nancie, wanderfood is so good, and so bad for making us crave other people’s entries! 🙂
ah, your recent posts make it so hard to work and not just run off to Italy for summer fun! (not that that’s an option, but one can dream….) Murano is quite sweet & Venice is one of my favorite cities. I know some people knock it because it’s touristy, but I think there are great little non-touristy spots there and there is so much more there than people see at first glance…well, ah…I just love it!
Just as your tweets make me homesick for Paris! 🙂 I enjoyed the islands this time more than Venice but that’s an article for another time. Nothing wrong with touristy places. It’s how the tourists behave in them that often spoils them 😉
Those pictures of long summery days in Italy really make this filthy wet weather in Sydney even harder to deal with! Arggh. I want to be eating piadinas in Italy now…
Forager, I’m feeling very nostalgic for warmer skies, particularly Italy and France…
Those look so tasty! I have a feeling the beautiful Venetian atmosphere made them even more delicious.
You’re right! Sitting across from the canal in Murano heightens the senses.
