Giving this historic building in Berlin’s west a cursory glance could easily have any traveller mistake it for just a giant department store. Upon the top floors of Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe – pronounced Kar-de-vay) rest a gourmet food hall and markets.
KaDeWe Food Emporium
After circling escalator after escalator, the seventh floor greets you with a world of foods. The Gourmet Floor boasts over 30 gourmet stalls, thousands of wines and a whole wide range of food types, all ready for your eyes to devour. Cheeses, chocolates, cold meats, assorted sweets, and other fresh produce sit at various stalls, arranged in a neat manner. Considering the size of the building, becoming lost amidst the stalls and shops becomes a very real, but very enjoyable, prospect.
Should any of the stalls show something that piques your interest, you might spy a benchtop and some stools to the side. Friendly staff will provide you with a menu and wine list so that you can select something that they prepare right in front of you.
It’s the perfect complement to finish your day after perusing the six floors below. Your feet will thank you for the rest, and your senses will thank you for the meal.
