Standing on the top of the rock of Gibraltar, the panoramic view below encompasses the sea, the mountain ranges and pretty coastal dwellings. And then there’s the airport. Getting from Spain to Gibraltar is via a road that intersects with the runway. Every time a plane is due to land or take off, traffic stops for an incomparable show with roaring sound effects and that unique smell of travel.
As the international airport is located is some 500 meters from the centre of the city, you could even wheel your bags to your hotel.
Unfortunately, there was no plane action when our tour bus crossed the tarmac and began its ascent into the Rock.
Gibraltar is a slice of Britain on the tip of Europe. The self-governing British territory is located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula and stands at the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar.
The images and videos of planes landing there are pretty amazing. I guess you just end up working with the space you have 🙂
Wow, that is beautiful. I can’t believe how close the airport is.
Anil – Hello and welcome 🙂 Some of photos doing the rounds look unreal yet they’re no hoax!
Dave and Deb – Thank you. The view from Gibraltar is so amazing I don’t believe photos can do it justice!
Great photo. You know, this kind of reminds me of Hong Kong’s old Kai Tak airport in the city. It came in through the bay, with a glorious view of the water, mountains, and city buildings! Awesome as well!
Jen – Thank you :). It’s been a while now but I remember Hong Kong airport and how scary it was to land there!

This view will be history soon Corinne. We’re building a tunnel under the runway. Should be open later this year. I’ll send you a pic if you like, so you can update.
Greetings from Gib.

Hi Brian! That’s a shame in a way that it will be gone. But it’s probably a safer option. I would love the photos, thank you, and they will be credited to you, of course 🙂
