Book Review: Naples A Way of Love

Travel inspiration can strike any time, from flicking through travel brochures, reading your favourite travel website to thumbing through the glossy pages of travel books.

The online medium has beyond doubt changed the way we get our travel information. With a reduced attention span, we need it fast, we need it at our fingertips, and we need it to be sufficiently informative. Yet the romance of turning the pages of a travel book, at one’s leisure while sipping a cool drink or lounging in the sun can evoke the strongest urge to seek new destinations.

Naples A Way of Love
Naples A Way of Love

Such is the effect of the book, Naples, A Way of Love. The colourful hard copy is a the work of two Sydney expats living in Italy, photographer Carla Coulson and writer Lisa Crawford.

The book is essentially a gripping photojourney through the city. The vivid cover pulls you in and takes you into the daily lives of the Napolese. You’ll get to know them through their portraits, their craft, passions and dedications.

Meet some of the colourful pizzaolos of the city, walk through the the Fishermen’s Quarters and sip a caffe at a bar. Get to know a woodturner, and a luxury shirt maker, and learn about the religious customs while you discover parts of Napoli that only a local would know intimately. Foodies will revel in the segments that feature the cafes, pizzas and pastries of Naples, longing for that caffe del nonno and a rum-soaked baba.

The book fuses the nostalgia of black and white images with vivid, almost instagrammed photographs in vibrant pages that encourage slow travel and the romance of seeing the world through the locals’ eyes.

Naples, A Way of Love is available from Dymocks Books and other bookshops.
