Sips & Bites #5: Artemis Gin, Long Chim Sydney, Whisky Chicks & More

Sips & Bites is a new section featuring bite-sized information on new restaurants and bars including what’s on in Sydney. This new feature replaces the monthly “New Restaurant and Bars Openings” and is published on a regular basis.

Artemis Gin

artemis-gin

A new Australian gin distilled by Derv and Seb at the Craft & Co. is being released through a crowd funding campaign. Artemis Distilled Australian Gin (44%ABV) is a classic dry gin, juniper forward, inspired by history, cocktails and the scientific method. Named after the botanical Artemisia, the gin combines classic and native Australian botanicals. The duo behind it are Derv and Seb, a scientist and a bartender respectively. You may know Sebastian Reaburn from many notable Melbourne bars including 1806. He also co-created Heartbreaker and worked on 42 Below, 666 Pure Tasmanian Vodka, and Bacardi Martini Australia.

Batch 1 of Artemis Distilled Australian Gin is now available for pre order through Pozible. You can support the new Australian gin here.

Meaning ‘come and taste’, the 190-seat restaurant is split over two levels. The cocktails are developed by Long Chim’s main barman, James Connolly, and the list of  wines is selected by Greg Plowes. Full review to come soon.

Whisky Chicks at The Oak Barrel

Whisky Chicks at The Oak Barrel

This week I was invited to attend an event close to my heart, Women in Whisky with Shanti Korporaal of Whisky Chicks at The Oak Barrel in Sydney where a line up of women in the whisky industry discussed their experience over 7 drams in a relaxed and engaging evening.

The speakers were L-R: Sarah Miller (Pure Scot/Bladnoch); Laura Hay (veteran of many distilleries); Lisa Russell (Island2Island); Shanti Korporaal (Whisky Chicks); Bethany Cannan (Oak Barrel); Kathleen Davies (Nip of Courage); Rachelle Hair (Baxter Inn – not in photo).

As many of you know, back in 2014, I published “Women in Whisky: The Girl from Glenlivet, The Ambassador & The Writer” with Laura Hay, Jane Overeem and myself in a round table interview/ discussion. Last night’s event reminded me of what was a mere idea that I brought to life, bringing together women of various whisky backgrounds over the appreciation of fine drams and conversations. Kathleen Davies of Nip of Courage kindly spoke about my article in her discussion of women in whisky in Australia. Keep an eye out for more women-only events with Whisky Chicks.
