Mennonite Martini by Rollo Anderson

Old world flavours come together in Rollo Anderson’s Mennonite Martini, a well-crafted cocktail that combines two ancient spirits, genever and mezcal. The name pays homage the Mennonites who took Dutch traditions into Mexico. The drink uses jonge genever as the dominant spirit with a reposado mezcal and sugar syrup, stirred over ice with dashes of orange bitters.

The textural drink has a predomiant genever flavour on the front palate, followed by a hint of smoke from the mezcal which increases in intensity as you drink it. A japaleno garnish macerated in old style genever and fresh juniper berries gives the drink a good measure of heat which increases as it steeps in the glass.
