Step through the entrance and into the lobby and you’ll find the interior to be traditionally decorated in a manner reminiscent of a stately home.

The rooms vary in décor and configuration. Room 119 is spacious and comfortable with striped fabric walls lending a feel of grandeur to the experience. A large window faces the garden. The bed and linen are luxurious guaranteeing a restful night’s sleep.

A writing desk is equipped with amenities and free, fast and reliable wifi is available. A welcome note and gift of Bea’s Home Made Biscuits from the management add a nice touch, as is the follow-up phone call after checking in to ensure all is well.

A few steps lead into a very narrow bathroom with a heated floor and a shower above the bath. The bathroom is night-lit with a blue light for safety as not to fall down the stairs.

The sink is tiny and barely accommodates one person’s toiletries let alone two people in the room. A soft bath robe and slippers are provided.

Breakfast is served at Blue Door Bistro with a choice of continental and full English breakfast.

You can start with Smoothie of the Day, freshly-baked bread and pastries, yoghurt, muesli, a selection of British Cheese, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel and freshly squeezed juices.

English breakfast offers a choice of scrambled, poached, fried or boiled eggs, crispy bacon, hash browns, mushrooms and black and white pudding. Aside from scrambled eggs, the other eggs are cooked to order.

High Tea Room

High Tea is served daily in the colonial style conservatories with natural lighting and rotating ceiling fans.

The high tea ceremony begins with a historical explanation of high tea, also included in the menu and a selection of teas from English Breakfast to Earl Grey and Lapsang Souchong.

The Traditional Afternoon Tea includes a selection of finger sandwiches in the lower tier with egg mayonnaise and mustard cress, smoked Scottish salmon, free range corn fed chicken with celery and almonds, cucumber, cream cheese and chives. The middle tier offers traditional plain scones and fruit scones served with strawberry preserve and clotted cream. The top cream is a little sweet indulgence with macarons, cup cakes, eclairs and berry tart.

High Tea is served daily between 12pm and 6pm.

The Terrace Bar at the Montague has a British lodge feel to it with plaid patterns and dark leather seating. A piano sits on one end with live entertainment provided every Monday to Saturday evening from 7.00pm until 10.00pm

Montague on the Gardens is a charming boutique hotel with all the modern comforts. Service and housekeeping are faultless and little touches such as complimentary newspapers with a sticker denoting the weather and temperature on the cover.

Useful Information

Montague on the Gardens is located between the Russell Square tube station and the Holborn station, both within a seven minute walk.

Nearby attractions include the British Museum which is a 2 minute walk from the hotel.

Various suites are available and if you’re looking for pure indulgence, the two-bedroom Guv’nor’s Suite is an elegant private home with an inviting copper bath in the bedroom, fully equipped kitchen and antique furnishings.
